Notes that he has received several letters from her including one dated 4 August 1863. Says the army is falling back towards Atlanta, Georgia. Also reports an account of mutiny that took place in December where officers attempted to punish a group of soldiers by forcing them to wear barrels (a common punishment in both armies). When the soldiers refused, a regiment was brought up to enforce the punishment. Parody of "'Twas the Night Before Christmas" poem. In Archer's "The Night After Christmas," children all over the town had eaten sweets to such an extent that it made them all sick. Instead of hearing the clattering of hooves on the roof, the family is awoken by the moans and groans of the children: "O' Me! I'm so sick: I shall die of this pain; I'll never touch Santa Claus' candy again!" At the end of the parody there reads: "Written when he broke his arm for his granddaughter Roberta Archer Jeffrey."

Also mentions going to St-Louis in the winter, loss of trunk.

Discusses lack of activities on a Sunday, a damaging "cyclone" [tornado] which had recently raged in St. Louis, the appearance of the flu as it passed through the city, how she mistakenly sending two cents with the last letter, a request that Aaron share all his feelings with her as "it would make me miserable to know that you had a single pain or joy that I could not share with you." Mentions receiving several "callers" but thought that most of the men were too conceited, happenings in St. Louis. There is much cross-writing on several of the pages. Ink smudges on the letter reveals…
