The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History provides annual short-term research fellowships in the amount of $3000 each to undergraduate students majoring or minoring in History, American Studies, Africana, Political Science, or related fields. International college students are eligible to apply.
Launched in 2022, this program enables young historians to do research using the Gilder Lehrman Collection—a repository containing more than 87,000 items documenting the political, social, and economic history of the United States—and other New York City archives.
This year, all candidates are encouraged to apply for the Gilder Lehrman College Fellowship in honor of Harvard professor Alan Heimert (1928–1999). For this award, preference will be given to applicants whose projects focus on seventeenth- and eighteenth-century American history.
Special attention also will be given to project proposals on the history of slavery and abolition. The Gilder Lehrman College Fellowship in Slavery and Abolition Studies will be awarded to the leading applicant in this field.
