At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One newspaper clipping sent by Omer H. Kelpe to Virginia Heidt Kelpe in a letter dated September 25, 1944. The cartoon features two boys playing in a park they are wearing newspaper hats and carrying toy weapons. They are pointing at a man lying on the ground. The caption reads, "Should he be a dead Jap or a tired Yank?"
