Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One newspaper clipping sent by Omer H. Kelpe to Virginia Heidt Kelpe in a letter dated September 25, 1944. The cartoon features a girl balanced precariously on a chair stacked on a table that is on a couch. She is reaching to get a statue off a high shelf. The caption reads, "For Pete's sake Mother, stop worrying about where I am. I'm right here in the living room."
