Negative by J. Gardner. Taken from "Gardner's Photographic Sketchbook of the Civil War. No. 21" with text accompanying panel. Heavy fighting took place around the church, and after the battle it was used as a field hospital. This photogrpah was taken some time after the extensive battle damage inflicted on the church was repaired [according to the Dates of creation, the image was taken in July 1863]. Two of Gardner's assistants appear on the right side of the church.

A print of a photograph of the 41st New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Approximately sixty-two men posed around construction site. Note the partially constructed sidewalk in the left foreground and the lumber in the right background. The soldier's rifles are stacked. Some of the soldiers pose as if they are whittling and one looks as if he is drinking from a canteen. One soldier poses with a bugle and another with a drum, and many tug on pipes. Officers are present in the foreground. The 41st N.Y. was active from June 27, 1861 to July 3, 1863.

Participated in many battles with the Army of the Potomac. About 120 enlisted artillerymen in field with wagons in background. Graphite inscription on verso of image: "4." The artillery identification is based on the men wearing hats with crossed cannons.

A print of a photograph of the destroyed Richmond & Petersburg Railroad Bridge which crossed the James River in Richmond, VA. The R & P railroad stretched 22 miles from Richmond to Petersburg, VA, though today it has been connected to and is administered as part of CSX. The bridge was destroyed by the Confederate Army during the Fall of Richmond as they retreated from the Confederate capital. A print of a photograph of the Essayons Dramatic Club, an amateur theatrical company comprised of members of the U.S. Engineers. The "castle" insignia worn only by U. S. Regular engineers and the 15th & 150th N.T. Engineers clearly identifies them. The club included members from different companies, as indicated by the letters B, C, and D visible on caps. The dramatic club persisted until at least 1968. Graphite inscription on verso: "Gardner XI-II 336."

A photograph of General Marsena Rudolph Patrick and his staff seated on a porch. Patrick is seated at center with hate on knee and holding saber. Patrick was the Provost Marshal for the Army of the Potomic for much of the war. Note a drapery / banner hanging from the front of the porch that is furled. Inscription on verso: "Gardner XXIV 588." A print of a photograph of union officers and enlisted men. The men are posed in front of a large stack of boxes near a military railroad box car. There are three sailors, five soldiers [including two generals], and three men who appear to be in civilian clothes. The man seated at left is Brig. Gen. John Henry Hobart Ward. Painted on the box car are the initials U.S.M.R.R. [United States Military Rail Road]. Inscription on verso: "Ordway-Gardner VI (or IV) 40."

An abandoned Confederate freight train remains on the tracks on the left side of the photograph.
