At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A print of a photograph of the 2nd Regiment of Artillery (popularly known as the 2d U.S. Artillery, today the 2nd Air Defense Artillery Regiment). Participated in many battles with the Army of the Potomac. About 120 enlisted artillerymen in field with wagons in background. Graphite inscription on verso of image: "4." The artillery identification is based on the men wearing hats with crossed cannons.
