Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A print of a photograph of the Essayons Dramatic Club, an amateur theatrical company comprised of members of the U.S. Engineers. The "castle" insignia worn only by U. S. Regular engineers and the 15th & 150th N.T. Engineers clearly identifies them. The club included members from different companies, as indicated by the letters B, C, and D visible on caps. The dramatic club persisted until at least 1968. Graphite inscription on verso: "Gardner XI-II 336."
