Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Negative by J. Gardner. Taken from "Gardner's Photographic Sketchbook of the Civil War. No. 21" with text accompanying panel. Heavy fighting took place around the church, and after the battle it was used as a field hospital. This photogrpah was taken some time after the extensive battle damage inflicted on the church was repaired [according to the Dates of creation, the image was taken in July 1863]. Two of Gardner's assistants appear on the right side of the church.
