At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A print of a portrait of Major General Alfred Pleasonton and 22 members of his staff. He was the cavalry commander of the Army of the Potomac and had a very interesting career, eventually retiring as a Major in the regular army. Graphite inscription on verso: "Gardner XXIV 369."
