At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Mary Lou Cary to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated circa 1973-1974. Cary is against the impeachment of President Nixon. She includes newspaper articles that concern the impeachment. Cary writes that she doesn't believe it is necessary to take those steps. "I never will condone the extreme ruthlessness that the Republican Party treated President Nixon, the best President that this Country has ever had or ever will have."
