At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One trading card from the Red Menace collection, "30. Helicopters in Action" depicting soldiers carrying off a wounded man onto a helicopter in an icy terrain. Reverse side contains propaganda narrative mentions the aid that helicopters provide during the Korean War. Text uses colloquial language while referring to helicopters, as 'copters or "egg-beaters."
