Entries cover period 1 April - 16 September 1864, and document Sherman's March to Atlanta and the Battles of Atlanta and Jonesborough. In the first part of the diary he describes his post as a surgical nurse in an army field hospital, discussing amputations, surgeries and deaths. The collection includes documents and letters written to the Worcester family, especially the father, John, from Lieutenant John H. Worcester and his younger brother Charles H. Worcester. John was wounded at Fort Wagner, South Carolina, and taken prisoner. He was later exchanged and died from gangrene while aboard a hospital steamer. The George W. Buntly collection of Civil War correspondence is primarily composed of letters written by Confederate infantryman Buntly to his brothers, William and Jacob. For most of the war both brothers are located in Lincoln County, Tennessee, but towards the end of the war it seems that Jacob was either drafted or enlisted. Though the letters in the collection begin when he is at camp in Kentucky, Buntly was stationed in lower south for the majority of the war, including southern Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, and Georgia. The Captain James R. Kelly collection of Civil War correspondence contains 42 items. Kelly served with Company K of the 14th Regiment Indiana Volunteers from 1861 until his death on 8 May 1862. He saw action at Cheat Mountain and in the Shenandoah Valley. Captain Kelly's papers include letters to his wife Mary (#1-3, 8-24), living in Bloomington, Indiana, and inventories of the possessions of dead soldiers from his company (#4-8). Reports that Nancy's friends in Newport were surprised to learn she had undergone variolation. Ellery has also been inoculated. Comments on his old age. A Member of the Continental Congress from 1776 until 1785, William Ellery was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Nancy was his daughter.
