At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Marion Arguello to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated January 10, 1974. Arguello is against the impeachment of President Nixon and writes, "No one knows as much about foreign policy as he does. Presidents all the way back to Truman, and even President Roosevelt have had their [sic] cover-ups, and I'm sure have done some underhand things that were not discovered or told to the public."
