At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Contains dispatches of General George Washington and Congress. Includes reports on various ships, and war news from Georgia. Contains a report from the House of Commons pertaining to a bill for the encouragement of Irish trade. Includes a report on Continental troops taking a British officer (Captain Ogden) hostage near Tarrytown, New York. Refers to an investigation conducted by General Philip Schuyler related to events in Canada. Contains an extract of minutes of the General Assembly, authorized by Assembly Clerk Thomas Paine, related to "An Act for striking the sum of One hundred thousand pounds in Bills of Credit, for the present relief of the Army ... " Contains notices of sale, one of which depicts the printed image of a black horse.
