At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Reports on his health and on his mother's death. His regiment is attempting to obtain his discharge, but he does not want to go home yet. Tells Ogden that he would like to visit her if he lives. Also comments unfavorably on the care he received in the Detroit Hospital. Includes an embossed seal in the upper left hand corner.
