Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Stuart's Expedition Into Maryland & Pennsylvania, Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation Denounced in Brooklyn, Morgan's Last Raid Into Lexington.
An editorial examines the duty of the states in terms of providing a certain number of troops and caring for soldiers' families. A letter to the editor discusses the value of the South and how the North has taken advantage of Southern resources. An ad gives physical descriptions of deserting soldiers. A list of the killed and wounded is printed.
