Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A column titled "Latest News" gives war briefs and reports, as well as a column with "the very latest from the North," detailing war news. Notices from particular North Carolina troops are printed. Laws, minutes, and reports of the state of North Carolina are often printed. Advertisements refer to fugitive slaves, soldiers in need of clothing and supplies, the sale and rent of plantations and other retail items. Obituaries are often included.
