Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

North Carolina State Convention, Burnside's Official Report of the Capture of Newbern, North Carolina.

Several editorials attack local papers and their opinions on various topics, including war and the gubernatorial elections. Notes from North Carolina's recent state convention are included, with the state comptroller's report. A notice advertises poisoned cannonballs and the possibility of poisoning water sources. Articles discuss the Conscription Act and implications on volunteers.
