At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Mentions a rebel attack the previous evening in which rebels took control of railroad but were driven back. Describes the capture of 600 soldiers, the capture of Southside railroad, and the arrival of General Philip Henry Sheridan with his cavalry force. Highlights the gallantry by members of the army including the retrieval of wounded soldiers near enemy's line, and setting fire to two story house from where the rebel sharpshooters were perched.
