At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Consists of letters written from Morey to members of his family while enrolled as a member of the Second Regiment Vermont Volunteer Infantry. The Second was organized at Burlington, and was mustered into the United States service on 20 June 1861. It was the first three-year's regiment raised in Vermont. The letters begin in August of 1861 and span almost the entirety of the war ending on 26 March 1865, shortly before his death. Most of the letters are written to his mother and sister Mamie. Some letters are written to other family and friends. Collection includes 60 letters, 9 envelopes, and 9 pieces of ephemera.
