At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses "very hard fighting" in recent battles, and lists the names of the men from the regiment killed in action. Most likely referencing the battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse that occurred on 12 May, though this is not indicated in the letter. Pre-printed letterhead reads: Headquarters - Second Vermont Infantry, Sixth Corps.
