At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written from the south side of the Pamunkey River. Declares, "we have taken the Peninsular as the proper approach on Richmond." Indicates his pleasure with General Ulysses S. Grant and Grant's decision to "go precisely on [General George B.] McClellan's plan." Discusses planned march towards Richmond, 18 or 20 miles away.
