At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Mentions the recent Republican defeat; "Our democratic friends here have been jollifying noisily enough, yet not offensively, and rebel sentiment has not shown itself as far as I have seen or heard." Refers to the election of Confederate General John S. Marmaduke as Governor of Missouri. Discusses the weather and crops. Letter is illegible on bottom due to fraying.
