Maitland (1839-1918) was a pro-Union Democrat. His correspondence discusses the war and politics. Maitland's collection includes commentary on the 1863 political campaign for Governor of Ohio, Morgan's Raid, religious matters (Baptists in Ohio), the Peninsula Campaign, Vicksburg, Gettysburg, Vallandigham, Nathan B. Forrest, black soldiers, assassination of Lincoln, and mustering out. Includes a Hymn Book, 3 military papers, 28 pre-war items (letters and documents) and 88 post-war or undated letters or documents.
James M. Maitland, Joseph's father, was active in the Democratic party of Ohio. He took part in Stephen A. Douglas's campaign, and served as a one-time representative of his district in the state legislature. His wife, Ann Mast, was the daughter of Daniel Mast, a leader in the Mennonite church in Pennsylvania. The Mast family originally came to America from Holland on account of religious persecution. They had three children: Joseph M. Maitland, William G. Maitland, and a daughter who died in infancy. Ann Mast's brother, Elhanan, served as a lieutenant colonel in the Thirteenth Ohio Volunteer Infantry. William G. Maitland worked for the railroad in Pennsylvania and Indiana, and eventually settled in Colorado where he represented the Fidelity & Deposit Company of Maryland (Wilbur Fisk Stone, History of Colorado, Vol. III. Denver: S. J. Clarke and Co., 1918). Joseph Maitland enlisted on 8 August 1862 as a private. He was mustered into "G" Co. OH 95th Infantry. He was mustered out 31 May 1865 at Memphis, Tennessee.
