At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Grier writes to his brother Joseph. Asks him to write to a church member who has been raising the membership. Complains "...we will never have anything of a revival until we have a house fit to serve God in." Letter continues the following day. Remarks "I don't know whether our rich folks have raised enough money to clear the township from draft or not, they lacked one thousand dollars the last meeting they held." Discusses putting new fencing around the whole property in the spring.
