A print of a photograph of the Essayons Dramatic Club, an amateur theatrical company comprised of members of the U.S. Engineers. The "castle" insignia worn only by U. S. Regular engineers and the 15th & 150th N.T. Engineers clearly identifies them. The club included members from different companies, as indicated by the letters B, C, and D visible on caps. The dramatic club persisted until at least 1968. Graphite inscription on verso: "Gardner XI-II 336."

A print of a photograph of union officers and enlisted men. The men are posed in front of a large stack of boxes near a military railroad box car. There are three sailors, five soldiers [including two generals], and three men who appear to be in civilian clothes. The man seated at left is Brig. Gen. John Henry Hobart Ward. Painted on the box car are the initials U.S.M.R.R. [United States Military Rail Road]. Inscription on verso: "Ordway-Gardner VI (or IV) 40."

This is the complete album as published, and is more complete than GLC 2833 (36 photos). This album includes "Sherman and his Generals" and most of Sherman's campaign from Chattanooga, through Atlanta and Kennesaw Mountain, Peach Tree Creek, Columbia, S.C., and views of Charleston and Fort Sumter. The image of John Ross's home appears to be that of Cherokee Indian chief John Ross, who left the house during the Trail of Tears.

Title: to James Dinsmore re: architecture and building projects at Monticello

The document is overall tanned. Jefferson discusses the style of doors for the North Pavilion at Monticello, mentions Poplar Forest's window frames, and suggests dismissing the worker Stewart. Dinsmore (d. 1830) was a housejoiner who worked and lived at Monticello from 1798 until 1809. He was the principal joiner for the remodeling at Monticello and was responsible for important interior finish work. He also worked for James Madison and John H. Cocke. See Jefferson Memorandum Book p. 985, note 63.
