Says he has not heard from his mother in "some years past."

Asks the commissary, James Forsyth, to issue rations for Thomas Nelson, his wife, and 2 children from 16-31 of July. Says that Nelson is a furloughed man from the Massachusetts artillery who was detained by the sickness of his wife. Nelson signed the docket stating that 64 rations were delivered to him.

Order issued by General Knox's aide-de-camp Major Shaw for West Point Commissary James Forsyth to issue seven days worth of rations for three British deserters "to carry them to Philadelphia." It appears that Shaw was reusing paper, as a few lines of poetry are written on the verso of this document.

Recto has a partial copy of the order in Doughty's hand and under his signature. A note beneath Doughty's signature says "Recd the above."

The order specifies that they be given one peck of peas and in the future, with every ration, issued one gill of rum "whether country or West India."
