At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written by Bliss to Major General Knox. Wants to renew his acquaintance with Knox in hopes that Knox will perform an act of kindness for him. Bliss has included a letter to his mother as well as some money for her, and hopes Knox will forward the letter and money by a safe conveyance. Says he has not heard from his mother in "some years past."
