At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written in a secretarial hand and signed by Colonel Jackson in his capacity as the Treasurer of the Massachusetts branch of the Society of the Cincinnati. This receipt acknowledges that Knox gave one month's pay to be used for the establishment of a fund agreeable to the Society.
