Sherman is marching for North Carolina and several of the Rebels are "deserting very fast." Tells Ogden that he saw William Boles, a soldier with whom he stood guard as a member of the Oneida Cavalry, at General Ulysses Grant's Headquarters. He will be going to Washington to receive five hundred dollars for his service, which he will express to her. Tells Ogden to send the money to his father if he does not survive the war. Mentions his sadness over the death of President Abraham Lincoln, as well as the falling of Mobile, Alabama.

Tells Ogden about an expedition to avenge the death of Colonel Dalgreen. Also reports on the Rebels' mistreatment of captured officers of General Hugh Kilpatrick's command.

States he likes the place where he is staying on 24th and South Street because it has seventy-five beds and an upper ward.

In a Postscript he asks that Mrs. Ogden remember him to the officers and members of Weiler's company.
