At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Apologizes for not visiting her at the Hospital while he was in the area. Tells her to keep the money he sent her previously. States, "I may get home this winter then I can take it with me." Says he has been appointed to the position of ward master. Requests that she send him her picture so that he can "remember one that took care of me when wounded." Year of the letter was taken from the envelope. Includes an embossed seal in the upper left hand corner.
