At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Tells his son, John, that he received word of his sickness from his nurse, Mrs. Ogden. Sends news of home and wishes for John's recovery. Expresses his hopes that John will be able to come home. Concludes by sending love from relatives and asking John to give Mrs. [Sarah] Ogden his respects.
