At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Describes a difficult march and his new position as Provost Guard. Writes he fears that he will never see his family again, and states that he considers the hospital at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania his second home. Apologizes for his sloppy handwriting, but explains that he is writing the letter on his knee.
