A print of a photograph bronze artillery gun [12 lb. Napoleon] and caisson inside Fort Totten's (1st, at Washington, DC. NY Ft. Totten not named so until 1898) gate. "Totten" painted across the top of the entrance. Six Union artillerymen stand between the guns and the gate. The insignia on the forage caps of some of the men indicate Co. D of the 3rd Mass. Heavy Artillery. Small sign on the slope in the background reads: "Keep off the Grass." Referenced in index of Photographic History of the Civil War. Verso notations: "Defenses of Wash."
