At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A print of a photograph of a group of cavalry officers. Previous entry into identity statement identified the man as center as General William H. French, which he is definitevely not. French was more portly, had differing facial hair, and often wore a longer jacket. Verso notation: "XXIV" "603"
