Soldiers carrying their rifles at the right shoulder shift and with bayonets fixed are spaced regularly along the sidewalk, in front of the men. The soldiers are Union troops wearing state or militia issued uniforms [either light blue or grey]. Crates of goods appear on the right hand side of the photograph. Army supply wagons appear on the left hand side of the photograph. Men are unloading crates from the wagon. Verso notations: "XXIX" "921"

A print of a photograph of High Street, Georgetown. Renamed Wisconsin Avenue in 1895 when Georgetown was brought into line with the rest of Washington, D.C.'s L'Enfant street plan. Crisp image of approximately 15 men posed in front of large building. The building in the immediate foreground has a sign that reads: "P. May's Bakery & Confectionary [sic]." Philip May leased the building at 75 High St. (now 1254 Wisconsin Ave., N.W.) for his bakery from 1853 to 1866. A print of a photograph of the Brigade Headquarters of Fort Lincoln, part of the defensive system around the capital (though technically located in Prince George's County, MD). Twenty Union officers are standing or seated on or near the first-floor porch of the building. It has a porch on the second floor as well. There is an ambulance parked on the left hand side of the image, between the end of the porch and a tree. Inscription on verso: "Gardner XXX 666. Defenses of Wash[ington]."

A print of a photograph of the officers of the 3rd Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Heavy Artillery at Fort Totten. There are seven men present, none of them general officers. The door to the house is open revealing some of the interior of the house including the wallpaper and a piece of furniture. Note the screen netting on the open windows. Inscription on verso "Gardner 261." It has been suggested that this is a rare view of the inside of officers quarters.

A man, small black child and a dog pose in the center of the image. The blacksmith shops and horses are in the background. Men work with horses on the left side of the image. Washington became a major center for army services during the war. Numerous government repair shops [some massive in size] employing hundreds of skilled and unskilled workers were established to keep the armies running.

A personalized flag [3rd Div., Cavalry Corps] displayed on the porch has the Latin word "Tuebor" ["I Will Defend"] painted above an ealge clinching an United States flag in the center of a large white circle. The flag has six red and six white horizontal stripes and is bordered with gold braiding. Painted in the stripes are the names and dates of battles. A print of a photograph of the USS Santiago de Cuba, a wooden, brigantine-rigged, side wheel steamer built in 1861 at Brooklyn, N.Y., was purchased by the Navy on 6 September 1861 at New York City; and was commissioned at the New York Navy Yard on November 5th, 1861, Comdr. Daniel B. Ridgely in command. Patrolled waters off the Eastern Seaboard for Confederate ships and blockade runners. Decommissioned July 17th, 1865, and sold on September 21st, 1865. Served as a mercantile ship for two decades afterward. Other frigates can be seen docked in the background.

Negative by J. Gardner. Taken from "Gardner's Photographic Sketchbook of the Civil War. No. 21" with text accompanying panel. Heavy fighting took place around the church, and after the battle it was used as a field hospital. This photogrpah was taken some time after the extensive battle damage inflicted on the church was repaired [according to the Dates of creation, the image was taken in July 1863]. Two of Gardner's assistants appear on the right side of the church.

A print of a photograph of the 41st New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Approximately sixty-two men posed around construction site. Note the partially constructed sidewalk in the left foreground and the lumber in the right background. The soldier's rifles are stacked. Some of the soldiers pose as if they are whittling and one looks as if he is drinking from a canteen. One soldier poses with a bugle and another with a drum, and many tug on pipes. Officers are present in the foreground. The 41st N.Y. was active from June 27, 1861 to July 3, 1863.

Participated in many battles with the Army of the Potomac. About 120 enlisted artillerymen in field with wagons in background. Graphite inscription on verso of image: "4." The artillery identification is based on the men wearing hats with crossed cannons.

A print of a photograph of the destroyed Richmond & Petersburg Railroad Bridge which crossed the James River in Richmond, VA. The R & P railroad stretched 22 miles from Richmond to Petersburg, VA, though today it has been connected to and is administered as part of CSX. The bridge was destroyed by the Confederate Army during the Fall of Richmond as they retreated from the Confederate capital.
