At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One newsmap entitled, "Kiska, After Summer of Softening Up, RIpe for Invasion" dated , August 18, 1943. Consists of a map depicting the island of Kiska where there were up to 12,000 abandoned Japanese soldiers left. On reverse side contains articles related to the Orel occupation by the Nazis; Russian army expanding borders; Allied submarines destroyed by Japanese army and other news. Also included is the Farmers Market Today column providing updates of businesses.
