At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One newsmap entitled, "Japs Bolstering Southern Bases in Fears of Allied Drive" dated March 8, 1943. Consists of a map depicting the Japanese army moving through New Britain and other islands off the coast of Australia. Reverse side contains articles related German forces in Algeria; a Mexican coffee company; highlight of a German newspaper accusing Americans of deterring the Vichy relations; and the repeal of anti-semitic decress in Algeria. Also included is the Farmers Market Today column advertising for hiring more farmers due to a shortage with men serviing abroad.
