At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One newsmap entitled, "Nazis Battle to Hold Donets as Reds Smash in the North" dated March 22, 1943. Consists of a map of Russia's timeline moving its front back and forth through Europe. Reverse side contains articles related to Charles de Gaulle preparing for a parley in French Guiana; release of Sarojini Naidu, activist from prison in India (she was held with Mohandas K. Gandhi); German forces in Algeria; and British Indian troops fighting against the Japanese. Also featured is the Farmers Market Today column highlighting a woman named Olive-Irene who joined WAACS and runs a pinafore shop.
