At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Collection of items belonging to Lynn J. Knapp dated 1939-1945. Contains correspondence, newspaper clippings, financial documents and personal documents. Majority of newspaper clippings contain political cartoons and updates of military servicemen during World War II. Correspondence primarily consists of letters sent to Roberta Knapp, Lynn's wife, who had the responsibility of running their venetian blind business while Lynn was abroad. Letters are sent from family members and friends providing Roberta with words of support and encouragement. There are a number of letters sent from Roberta Knapp to Lynn Knapp as well.
