At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Gerald D. Kleinman to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 9, 1973. Kleinman supports the impeachment of President Nixon. The letter was addressed to Alphonzo Bell and forwarded to Carlos Moorhead. He writes, "If he is permitted to remain in office, he will do irrevocable damage to our system of constitutional government."
