At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving titled Military Costume of the Revolution dated circa 1850. Includes five men in military uniform, the man in the center is drawn to look like George Washington. In the four corners are additional men in the uniforms of the Hessians, a rifleman, The British and the French. In the lower center is vignette with the title of the image seated on the vignette is a Native American and an American soldier. Also depicts the American and British flags.
