At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Virginia Stutzman to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated July 30, 1974. Stutzman supports the impeachment of President Nixon. She recognizes the responsibility associated with the House Judiciary Committee and the difficulty of their task, and empathizes with them fully. She then explains that they mustn't confuse the Presidency with the President, and that they should hold the former in higher regard than the latter for they swore to uphold the Constitution.
