At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes from Tupper. States, "in answer to the Lines found in a stocking." Expresses gratitude for the assistance of the Union women and asserts that the men will do their best to "save our land from slavery & And the oppressed clanking chain." Says the men will pray for the women back home. The location and date of the letter are not listed.
