At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Describes completion of the muster rolls. Reports acknowledgment from his mother of his hard work. Discusses the business of camp, such as raising funds to erect a monument in honor of the 6th corps late and "lamented commander Major General John Sedgwick which is to be erected at West Point," at a cost of $10,000. Also mentions raising money for Honorable Portus Baxter and wife for services to the sick and wounded. Reports that they have spent no less than $8,000 of their own money. Sends a check for $100 and requests his father to cash it and send credit back.
