At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Describes fighting during Wilderness Campaign and the death of Captain Orville Bixby. Lists casualties and includes a description of battle. Praises and gives thanks to God for sparing his life during fighting, and provides an account of being struck when a "spent ball hit my leg but did not disable me." Pre-printed letterhead reads: Headquarters - Second Vermont Infantry, Sixth Corps.
