At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Requests that his parents collect his town bounty from the town treasury. Encourages them to move and open a store in West Lebanon, New Hampshire. Also includes a quote from David Crocket: "be sure you are right then go ahead." Comments on the weather and a recent horse race. Mentions the resignation of Colonel James H. Walbridge and new commander Lieutenant Colonel Stone. Pre-printed letterhead reads: Headquarters - Second Vermont Infantry, Sixth Corps.
