At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Reports his nephew was also a candidate for clerk of the county. Expresses dismay at the outcome of the election; "...the only drinking gambling whoring man got it..." Mentions the poor health of one of the horses, "...I think at the next moon she will go blind..." Complains about the quality of the circulars he received. Letter is brown with small holes and fraying on the edges.
