At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Joseph writes to Bell informing her he will remain in Memphis indefinitely. Reports his Captain requested he not be transferred due to his excellent qualifications as a clerk. Speculates on the possible reasons for the quick marriage of mutual friends. Complains about the mosquitoes. Letter includes a small fragment.
