At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Joseph writes to Bell informing her he has been relieved of his clerkship and must report to his Regiment. States Union General Edward R. Canby sent the order to relieve all clerks from Memphis. Hopes to get a clerkship in Vicksburg or New Orleans. Says he doesn't know where she should send her letters.
